Pianos are designed to sound their best when tuned to the international pitch standard of A=440 Hz. Unless there are structural problems, the piano will always be tuned to this standard.
A freshly tuned piano, if not properly voiced, can still sound unpleasant. Improvements in the quality of tone, or voicing, is usually included with a regular tuning.
Repairs
Proper piano maintenance involves much more than tuning.
Broken, sluggish, or noisy action parts, broken or missing strings, sticking keys, missing hardware, and squeaking pedals are some of the many problems that may develop from normal use, misuse or neglect.
Regulation
A piano action is a marvelous compilation of hundreds of moving parts made mostly of wood and felt. These parts need adjusting periodically due to dimensional changes, normal wear, and compression.
A properly regulated action is essential for the pianist to utilize the expressive qualities for which the piano is designed.
Climate Control Systems
Ideally, a piano should be placed in a climate controlled room, where the temperature and humidity is at a constant level throughout the year.

Chipped, yellowing, loose, and missing ivory is a common problem on vintage pianos. In many cases an ivory keyboard can be restored rather than replaced with plastic. The feel and beauty of resurfaced, polished ivory cannot be matched, and will add to the value of the piano.

Restringing, refinishing, repairing or replacement of bridges and soundboards, replacement of pinblocks, refurbishing or replacement of action parts such as hammers, hammershanks, flanges, knuckles, and wippens, and replacement of action felt such as key bushings and dampers, are some of the restoration procedures that may eventually be required for older pianos.
