Serial #33636. Walnut case with bench, new action, new Dampp-Chaser climate control system, powerful, rich tone. $10,500

This piano was manufactured in the original Boston factory in 1927. The model RAA is the Ampico reproducing version of the standard 6’2″ model AA. Reproducing pianos are highly evolved player pianos that have sophisticated playing capability, making expression and variation in volume of musical notes possible, thus reproducing the performance of the original artist. Only the finest grand pianos were manufactured as reproducers. The reproducing mechanism has long since been removed from this piano, but what remains is a classic Mason & Hamlin grand in a walnut colonial art case, built to last several more generations.

The piano had been restrung and refinished, and the soundboard shimmed and refinished, prior to my acquisition. The pinblock and bridges are in excellent condition. Recent work includes new Abel German imported hammers, shanks, and flanges, and new action and damper felt. A new Dampp-Chaser climate control system has been installed. The piano has been meticulously regulated and tuned.

The tonal range is remarkably wide. In the words of Yehudi Menuhin, “Among all pianos none compares with the Mason & Hamlin in beauty and grace of tone, or in mellowness and softness and yet in bigness, or in anything that a sensitive and, as it were, human piano should have.”
